This game's iconic pastel graphics were done by hand and then digitally copied pixel-by-pixel. It was also going to have a pre-rendered CG style, but that idea only really panned out in the opening/ending cutscenes of the game.

I really am loving Kosmos from xenosaga. I hope I can watch the 20 hour cutscenes of all episodes someday to know more about her

I love the way the combat works and how it actually makes you think about the positioning of your characters, the way the game let's the characters keep the outfits you gave them in cutscenes, the friendly banter that feels realistic after a battle

@StrayaObscura The 1st is from a concept artist for Bungie (https://t.co/W1ghnr7grI), the 2nd is from the wiki and a few Bungie posts, and the 3rd is a screenshot from the last cutscene that he's seen in.

If you ever print something and it looks like this, you're working with (or worse, bought) a game asset someone flipped. MOST video games look like this! Hi-poly models are usually saved for cutscenes and promo stuff, nothing rendered live.
