St Sebastian (1610-14), View & Plan of Toledo (1610) & Picasso’s (c1899) painting inspired by El Greco (1590s). That El Greco was a giant is demonstrated by Picasso’s fascination with him. Do search him out!

El Greco died in Toledo in 1614, aged 73. His work, in characterising dynamic & colour over naturalism, is considered the most mannered of his time & was to have great impact on later artists. Opening of the 5th Seal (1608-14), Fray Hortensio (1609) & Laocoön (1610)

He was recognised by his contemporaries in the city as one of its greatest men. Despite this the religious were notoriously bad at paying their bills & so El Greco had financial issues. Toledo (1596-1600), St Francis (c1595) & Holy Family (1595-1600)

By 1577 El Greco had moved to Spain. It’s likely that his reported arguments with both artists & patrons led him to seek his fortune in Madrid & Toledo. Lady (1577-80), Allegory (1577-9) & St Sebastian (1577-8). Some have questioned the Lady Portrait which is in Glasgow.
