If they want to go for a more cartoony, even cel shaded look, then the perfect reference is Bengus' art circa X-men vs Street Fighter. You don't need any more colors or fine details than this. You absolutely need these incredibly subtle, refined shapes though!

it's not crazy refined, but came out today and i played it for a few hours and IM AM IN LOVE~

it's a wonderful mix of the first game, with new mechanics and 3D exploration.

I liked both versions so you get both :)

fully rendered pieces have clean lines and have painted in colours, whereas my coloured sketches will still have messy sketch lines and wont be as refined :) here's the two compared; left is coloured sketch, right is fully rendered. I put a lot more time and detail into rendered.
