February 25, 1639: Flemish painter Roelant Savery dies.

Savery was apprenticed to his elder brother Jacob, who was also a painter.

After his brother's death, Roelant became court painter to Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II (and his successor, Matthias).

Red Douglas from Tantallon & Lord Crichton from Crichton Castle burnt Black Douglas vassal lands of Corstorphine, Abercorn and Biggar. Fleming of Biggar burnt lands around Tantallon in reply but was unhorsed and thrown in dungeon. Forrester of Corstorphine burnt Crichton Castle.

Just adore the costume and expression on this woman in the choir stalls at St Cross hospital and almshouse. They are Tudor in date and possible Flemish in origin. Could help thinking of too

You don’t need an excuse to visit glorious Ghent, the usual Flemish vices of blonde beers (the urinals are made from their barrels) and chocolatiers are reassuringly ubiquitous, but the van Eyck exhibition recommended by the erudite is a life-affirming bonus
