The Emperor Domitian caused St. John to be apprehended and sent in chains to Rome. He was condemned into a cauldron of boiling oil, but the oil changed into a refresing bath. A sanctuary was built on this spot near the Latin gate.

The first 3 posters follow this thought process quite closely. These are straight forward illustration; to my mind very Bob Peak (last image) in aspiration. Rome and Turin share a vague 60s sensibility but Dortmund is a more modern departure in terms of use of artwork.
