Those small vertex that compose a model are called normals, each one of them reflects light in the direction that pointy thing is facing. It is essential to master those to do 3D NPR and get believable 2D shadows.

Two tips on improving your art 🎨
1- Don't be afraid of asking for help. Pic 1 is how I started. Then I asked my friend for help, she told me to draw a mesh on the characters to think about their volumes (pic 2) and pic 3 is how I redrew the shadows.
