Although resulting shapes sometimes are very elegant and aesthetic, it feels like literal overkill to make this kind of art via pixel-arting.

I'm usually pretty sceptical about any kind of 'de-pixelation' of pixel-art, but this filter is actually rather interesting. As an analytical tool, it shows how good with clusters you are.
