Oof this is me still trying to figure out Jacobi’s motivations—like, is he still using Lucy as a way to Graham?? That’s how the questions seem! #GHliveblog
This is minor, but the reason Jacobi doesn’t look at the menu is because he has a photographic memory—so he’s always looking at Lucy in this scene
I just wanted to give him gestures that felt a little off, even if you don’t consciously register them! #GHliveblog
Jacobi is purposefully invoking Lynn to build Lucy’s goodwill, but I also wanted to show that Jacobi DID actually follow Lynn’s advice and arrive early, because Jacobi IS actually a lot like Lucy #GHliveblog
This is the first time Lucy is in a dress! Lucy’s normal style is pants-based, so the only times I put her her in dresses are for scenes where I want to give the sense that she’s out of her element (this scene, the cooking competition, Lynn’s funeral) #GHliveblog
Jacobi is also a separated from the chefs of previous arcs because he ended up in a non-commercial kitchen—I wanted to explore what Lucy could do/how far she’d go when the cooking of one of the Dimanche chefs is almost completely inaccessible #GHliveblog
This is a minor characterization thing, but Graham plays guitar!
His sister Laura (current music teacher, former band/theater kid) forced him to learn so he could accompany her and her friends while they sang Rent or something #GHliveblog
I didn’t intend for this to look like the BA test kitchen, I grew up on Cook’s Country and America’s Test Kitchen for my test kitchen entertainment
But who am I fooling, this looks EXACTLY like the BA test kitchen lmao #GHliveblog
The only shoe brand details I kept account of are 1) Graham wears black Converse 2) Jacobi wears Adidas (or loafers) and 3) Clementine wears Crocs #GHliveblog
B+B’s offices being in the same building as Joanna’s publisher is how Joanna would’ve met Carlisle, and how Lucy would’ve met Jacobi—but without Carlisle, now it just feels like a happy accident that they met ha ha #GHliveblog
Originally, right after the Holiday arc, there was supposed to be 1-2 flashback eps about how the Apple trio met as setup for the Carlisle arc (which would’ve been Joanna and Walt-focused)
That’s why the introduction of Jacobi feels abrupt, there were no buffer eps! #GHliveblog
🎞 Jacobi arc liveblog!! This one’s going to be long, I apologize in advance...
Again, I’ll be using #GHliveblog if you’d like to mute it!
The purpose of this sequence was to show that Lucy now feels like having midnight convenience store pie with Graham (“at home with just one other person”) is as meaningful to her as a meal at Dimanche (“at the most expensive restaurant in the world”)! #GHliveblog
There’s no good reason why Lucy took down so many plates, even if she thought Clem and Meyer might join them (she’d only need four)—it’s just easier to draw a person holding lots of plates rather than two #GHliveblog
I ate single slice pies from Walmart with friends during college, so they make me sentimental ha ha!
This is def an “it’s the thought that counts” food moment—the difficult crepe cake was important, but I wanted to express the value of gestures like this too!! #GHliveblog
The egg mug! It was originally yellow like Lemon’s scarf, but too much yellow made it hard to see the eggs (and I didn’t want blue, since that’s Graham’s color) so it ended up pink
Only later did I realize it looks like Dami Lee’s shirt, but it was unintentional 😥 #GHliveblog
I also didn’t want to completely disregard family, though! Getting to show Graham as the youngest brother was fun! #GHliveblog
The holidays being a time when we reflect on our accomplishments can be painful, especially in our 20s/30s when everyone around us seems to be succeeding
I try to have one or two lines in every arc that’s the “gut punch” line, and Meyer gets it this arc! #GHliveblog
I know I said that GH isn’t the kind of story where I want the narrative to encourage readers to cheer for a character’s suffering
But we can wish for Meyer’s ex to suffer a little, as a treat #GHliveblog
