#PictureOfTheDay Artemisia Gentileschi
On his feast day, scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist by Massimo Stanzione (1, 3, 4) and Artemisia Gentileschi (2). From the Hermitage of San Juan, once on the grounds of the Buen Retiro palace in Madrid, c. 1636, now in the Prado #SanGiovanni #SanJuan
ghost cats in judith slaying holofernes by artemisia gentileschi - something i don’t have a cat pun for but a piece of art i sorely wanted to reproduce for this series.

2/2 Saint Christopher carrying the Christ child through a wonderfully luminous landscape. You can tell it was painted on copper! By Orazio Gentileschi, whose day is today.
Un caso de acoso tomado de la Biblia.
Adivina cuál de los dos ha sido pintado por un hombre y cuál por una mujer...
[Susana y los viejos, en las versiones de Alessandro Allori y Artemisia Gentileschi]

Who said that you can’t be a mother and an artist at the same time? Artemisia Gentileschi, Judith Leyster, Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Berthe Morisot
Day 39: Artemisia Gentileschi, Virgin and Child with a Rosary, c. 1651. Oil on copper. Monasterio de San Lorenzo, El Escorial. This small, signed copper panel seems to have been painted for Philip II of Spain. She often sent such small devotional works to potential patrons.
Day 33: Artemisia Gentileschi, David with the Head of Goliath, 1638-39. Oil on canvas, Private collection. The newest addition to Artemisia’s oeuvre, the artist's signature was discovered during restoration. It seems seems to have painted when the artist was briefly in England.
You want more chiaroscuro, you say?! 🌘 In the absence of the #Artemisia exhibition, due to open at @NationalGallery this week but now postponed, we give you - Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi @UffiziGalleries.

Day 12: Artemisia Gentileschi, Jael and Sisera, 1620. Oil on canvas. Szépmüvészeti Múzeum, Budapest. In this rare biblical subject, heroine Jael kills sleeping Canaanite general Sisera by driving a tent stake through his head. Artemisia signed her name on the plinth behind.

“Interpretación de Judit decapitando a Holofernes” - Artemisia Gentileschi.

Day 4: Artemisia Gentileschi, Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy, oil on canvas (Private collection). This painting was done in Rome either c. 1610-12, when she was a teenager, or a decade. Either way, it's a powerful response to Caravaggio’s lost version (known through copies).
