In 1795, French hussars captured the Dutch fleet because it was so cold the boats were frozen in place and the horses could just walk over.

How cool or uncool this event was is disputable.

But more importantly, I am imagining ice skating horses

I thought hussar braids looked kind of weird by modern standards, but my book said the reason was to help deflect a blow to the face and some guys really didn't want to switch to the more modern shorter hair styles that came afterwards.
