Norio Shioyama's Commander Bemmel from Daitarn 3 in 78' vs Yas' Captain Tokwan only a year later. I am seeing some similarities, even down to the fact that in the original script for ep. 31 of 0079, Tokwan was supposed to be a bit of a space pirate.

So I designed this. It’s an otter because they’re cute and look all innocent and stuff but actually they’re really aggressive, and I just really love otters. Then it’s holding a sword to make it extra macho, and then it has a pirate hat because it’s a pirate.
