To be fair Sonic's inkblot design is more traditionally American or at least less of what's stereotypically American than the red white and blue color scheme. Classic Sonic was definetly carrying some Felix the Cat influence. So it's more like half Western and half Japanese.

I know the games adopted chili dogs because of the old cartoons, but I also wonder if Sonic's association with rock/metal came from the early American Sonic's habit of playing electric guitar all the time. Even the US version of CD replaced the funky jams with guitar riffs.
