Monster: Wraith
Size: Medium
Alignment: Evil

Character Quote:
"Ghosts are dangerous, but can be dealt with. Wraiths
on the other hand are down right deadly and best avoided at all costs. "

Yet another meaningless discussion: The heroes spend five pages debating the best way to deal with the remaining Dire Wraiths, and what’s the conclusion?? Rom blasts them into Limbo, just like he’s done with every other Dire Wraith.

It’s looks like the Wraith War is finally over! The Dire Wraiths are powerless, their homeworld is gone, and they are no longer a threat to humanity. Now the only questions are what to do with the Dire Wraiths, and what is Rom’s role on Earth??

Dire Wraiths disguised as astronauts attempt to sabotage the orbiting neutralizer, but Rom stops them by flying a comet through their shuttle! But will they be able to complete the device in time??

Forge still doesn’t want to arm the military with his neutralizers, but he does get the governments of the world to agree to build an orbital space neutralizer, which can destroy all of the Dire Wraiths on Earth at once! I’m getting real Armageddon vibes here!

Rom talks to the little girl from last issue, Cindy, whose mind was temporarily merged with a Dire Wraith before it was killed. She understands that the Wraiths have created a black beam that draws energy from our sun, feeding it into the Black Sun of Wraithworld!

2 17

Rom sees a chance to completely wipe out the Dire Wraiths, since they have all gathered to create this supernatural device. But as the Wraiths flee, Rom notices that they have created a black spot on the Sun…and it’s growing!

Not a piece I’m super happy with, but it’s more of a test or practice. I’m just practicing drawing that demon mask for wraiths new skin.

The saddest part of Rogue's transformation is the reality that the monster's words could have just as easily been said by the reformed terrorist just two dozen issues ago, but the comparison between the her and the Wraiths is growing tired.

Thankfully, *drumroll please*...

At UXM close, our mutants miscalculated their victory over the Dire Wraiths, culminating in their capture by the Shadowbeings summoned by the Wraith.

The contrast between Forge's mysticism & machinery is again drawn–his advanced prosthesis saving him from the Shadowbeing.

...himself ultimately responsible for Ororo's transformation, isn't lost on me.

As I said earlier, the synergy between Ororo, Forge, Rogue, and the Dire Wraiths just *works* in this issue–a testament to Claremont's skill as a writer and a sign of how much his skill has grown...

...flexing her sheer awesomeness. She minimizes this skillset as "purely human", but UXM feels as much about Ororo proving her worth to herself as it does prove it to the readers.

The Dire Wraiths truly are Ororo's latest trauma personified, her fight against them...

...that the Dire Wraiths pose opposite Ororo's power–and identity–loss works pretty seamlessly in the issue.

I can't help but wonder if Claremont used any mandate to include the Wraith War in his storytelling as a source of inspiration for Ororo's depowering, or if this is...

...the Dire Wraiths provide an interesting parallel to the more violent aspects of her mutant ability.

Rogue absorbs Val's memories and learns not only of Ororo's whereabouts, but also of Forge's involvement in her depowering at Gyrich's hands.

There’s something terrifying about the idea that the ghouls could attack even when the sun was high.
