Today's pick: Jan Brueghel the Elder: Jonah Leaving the Whale https://t.co/cGa5FsoFfb
Serene and idyllic, Brueghel’s river view evokes the spirit of man’s harmonious interaction with nature.
Brueghel exploits this in his view of daily life along the Schedlt river. The sunlit river is the subject of this narrative scene that depicts a ferry landing just outside the city of Antwerp (identified by the cathedral in the distance).
This work is painted on copper, which was a popular medium for Brueghel and for many other Dutch and Flemish painters. Because oil paints can’t “sink into” copper like they do on canvas, they create a smooth and highly luminous surface.
Brueghel's earlier solo painting of Eden, where humans are almost a background afterthought
The Sense of Smell from a set of paintings on the five senses which was one of the most successful collaborations of Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Brueghel “the Elder”, 1617-18 (Museo Nacional del Prado)
