Other fish visible in this drawing are a gar (Obaichthys africanus) and a polypterid. Of the polypterid all we have are two jaw fragments, and one of those isn't even from the Kem Kem. Phylogenetic bracketing is a paleontologist's best friend.

I'm pretty sure Kabutops is mostly trilobite-based (in addition to horseshoe crabs). I'd also wager it's inspired by eurypterids (sea scorpions). The -ops part of its name might come from Triops, or maybe even Triceratops?

Sea scorpions (or Eurypterids) were big predators in the seas around 400 million years ago. Strong pincers would make an easy meal out of a trilobite. Some Eurypterids could grow as long as me!!
