thought this might be interesting to share, here's the layers for the shading! 1st pic is a multiply layer with all the main shadows, 2nd pic is blue ambient light (soft light, 50%), 3rd pic is the tentacles because they're special and get their own layer (set to overlay)

Multiply seems to work quite well in shadows, provided the applied color isn't too strongly saturated (then colors start to look "dirty"). But other than that, the color change looks pretty promissing. Good call!

When you work with strong light, like a Sunset, there are always strong shadows, but with the strong light source there is also a lot of stuff who get's hit by the light. It seems a little bit off to me that your character got colored, but everything around him is deep black.
