I'm only on episode 7 so no spoilers but I'm glad I figured it out.
The large eyes on Louis allows for far more expression, but it also pulls the eyes so far forward. Take Haru for example. Small eyes, roughly 1-1.5 eyewidth apart. Most are like that. Then theres doe-eyed Louis.
