draw clear separated planes of distance to start. Practice with distance-greying, and experiment with overlap once you've mastered establishing distance like that! It's what I did, here are some examples. Notice there's not a lot of gradual distance, it's all in layers.

1 thing im doing more now is adding extra details on a separated layer. This is really wild for me cuz if i wanted to do that i wouldve done it from the start, lining all of those as well (making it takes even longer)

you guys should try it out! it adds a lot with minimum effort

These next two scrapped monsters can't really be separated - 'Bunkurch' on the left, 'Chimoray' on the right.
They got replaced with Phonacora and Maerattl pretty late, just after Inkrost, Devoney, and Basalm were made.
Chimoray is rising out from behind Bunkurch's shell.

Working on the new reference and I've definitely observed some evolution in how I draw Jolligig's hair.

In my older art it used to come out in all directions and each strand was separated. Now I’m drawing it more like I originally intended. (1/2)

the bell gives dax their corruption magic and fundamentally they do not exist without it. the further they are separated from it, they weaker they are! and if it's destroyed, their existence is nulled entirely. hence why dax is a glitch in reality! because they shouldnt exist
