フローベール『聖アントニウスの誘惑』は1849年に第1稿が完成されたが、マクシム・デュ・カンなどに酷評されたためその後改稿が続けられ、1872年に第3稿で完成をみる(上梓は1874年)。その発端はブリューゲルの同名絵画を見たことだが、これはこの大ブリューゲルの作品ではなく、
