I'd say what they should have done is something similar to what was done to the enemies in dragon quest when they changed to 3d. They should have used the 2d sprites for reference to make the 3d ones feel more alive. For example:

Please look, I stayed up all night for this.

Verdict: I refuse to use any actually good paint program in an act of stubbornness and dedication.
