art tip... an easy way to do funky lighting is just by throwing a cool toned multiply layer over the whole drawing (doesnt have to be a gradient but it looks cooler that way) and then erasing the parts where u want the light to be hitting !!

I was showing one of my players how I made this picture.
As a summary:
1. The base (non flat colors)
2. Multiply layer in and flat layer for light
3. Few color dodges later (including the flat light layer)
4. half an hour of tweaks, additional color burns and rainbows later!

It’s after all of that is the round of final lighting above all the layers. I use a soft brush and another multiply layer to buff up shadows, overlay for more color moods, screen/add for softer light, and I soften the bg to make it less sharp against the foreground.

On top of the difference layer I do an overlay layer and I shade general idea of the light source, shading the characters/foreground/background independently. I use multiply for shadows and screen for highlights, but the highlights are mostly for hair and bounced light.

Step 3: Delete the unusable base sketch.
Step 4: Color in multiply layer and overexpose color.

Hi! I am a dirty and quick sketch.
If you do not have time or desire to make a sketch with color and that it is decent, you can choose a color for the brush, then in multiply layer give monochrome colors, and in another layer give the highlights in layer mode overexpose color.

more progress w rendering.. currently my process is ambient color overlay + basic shadows multiply, merge those w base colors and then start painting w direct color. now that i have a better idea of color direction i feel like it's more enjoyable hehe
