Paul Hippolyte Delaroche was born in 1797, in Paris. Trained by academic painter Antoine-Jean Gros, he first exhibited at the Salon in 1822. He went on to become one of the most popular French painters of the early 19th century.

‘Boat going to a vessel in distress’ by William Joy (1803-1849), oil on canvas. Joy was a part of the Norwich School of painters and enjoyed painting powerful, intense seas and ships that are stirred in a storm.

Before WWII, Stanley Meltzoff traveled in Italy to study the Renaissance painters. In the midst of war, Meltzoff was eager to find a way to draw, so he volunteered to illustrate poems that soldiers sent in to the military newspaper "Stars and Stripes".
