On December 6, 1735, surgeon Claudius Amyand performed the first recorded successful appendectomy on an 11 year old boy named Hanvil Anderson. The appendix was trapped in an inguinal hernia, a condition now known as Amyand’s hernia.

Vivien T. (1910-1985) was an African-American surgical technician who developed the procedures used to treat blue baby syndrome in the 1940s. He was the assistant to Alfred in experimental animal laboratory at Nashville, and later in Baltimore.
