Curves dialogues can be kind of intimidating, but once you know how to read them, they make more sense. Curves ONLY cares about value (how light or dark a color is), and any affects it has on saturation are secondary.

blocking out shadows and picking a palette! i don’t actually start with a full palette; i just select some base colors and then pick as i go. when i need a darker value, i add more saturation to keep my darker areas from getting muddy.

Great !, I am going through a similar process too, in my case I am just starting to increase the contrast when drawing, (very slowly, they are a year and a half apart, haha) the next step would be to increase the saturation

I lowered the opacity on the layer clipped on top, and changed the saturation and luminosity levels on the base colors to make it less oomph. It's nice having a 2nd screen to look at because I can see the slight different in color representation. BUT I think this is done now.
