It's more about knowing how to shape the world through your eyes vs copying what you see, which can end up looking soulless if you're not trying to achieve something extra. A good example would be Sarget's charcoal portraits. They are realistic but absolutly NOT beginner work

I actually do a lot of those! I tend to bounce between watercolor, charcoal, digital, and acrylics; most of the ultra art I post is watercolor, especially the quicker sketches. While I don’t do a lot of charcoal for fan stuff. I do use it for personal/student work
