Played around a lot with this one, trying out different brushes and blending modes. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I'm also still hard at work with my current writing projects. Hopefully, something will come of those soon.

I know our styles are very different but this could still help.
I don't actually use blending modes for shading. All of the colors are generally chosen and informed by the background and the light sources.
Basically, use tones from the background in your shadows to make them pop.
