義弘は、元和5年（1619年）大隈国加治木において、85歳という当時としては驚異的な長寿を全うし、島津義弘はその生涯を閉じもした。当時、固く禁じられていたにも関わらず、義弘を心から慕う家臣１３名が後を追って殉死したそうです。
