Beckmann’s work fell from prominence in the late 20th C but in the past two decades has had a resurgence & he is now recognised as one of the great artists of the 20th C. Elephants with Dancing Girl (c1944), Masquerade (1948), Woman with Mask (1948) & Perseus (1949)

Beckmann was a keen musician & instruments appear on his canvases as symbols of rhythm & the new Jazz age. The Synagogue at Frankfurt am Main (1919), Family Picture (1920), Carnival (1920) & the Dream (1921)
