Dave’s big sister, Bella, took seven teddies to bed with her every night. She had to sleep right up against the wall to stop herself from falling out. But Dave liked only Dogger. 2/2

Sad Hedgie Jesus
Legend has it that there was once a famous drunkard in Hedgtown. He stumbled forward in the darkness with that dogged determination that only drunkards possess.

We loved her books so much - Dogger was perhaps the favourite, but 'Alfie Gets in First' was read so much that it fell apart, and I had to replace it... Everything about them - the detail, the humour, the cats(!) - was a joy. She brought happiness to so many childhoods.

No one conveyed the small heartbreaks and riotous excitement of a toddler’s daily life like Shirley Hughes did - such tenderness, warmth, humour and understanding in every line. Desperately sorry to say goodbye to the creator of Dogger, Alfie, Lucy and Tom and so many more.

So sad to hear of the loss of the truly wonderful Shirley Hughes.

A wonderful writer and a true part of our childhoods.

Dogger will alway be the perfect story of kindness and love.
