It's personal way of drawing. If I don't have time, I paint black. When I have time, I paint the darkest areas with black and the rest with dark gray. And, I multiply the shadow color. Then If I add highlights, it somehow looks like that. Don't worry, you can use your intuition!

3am thoughts: While searching for refs for Futaba, i JUST noticed that royal's art style for the thieves is similar to that of p4a (usage of colored highlights, similar shading, but obviously more advanced)

Can anyone confirm if these were done by the same artist or not?
