Here is the family – and dog – in 1733, also painted by her friend William Hogarth.
For the benefit of this extraordinary story it is also worth noting that her husband was called ANNE – a rather cringey attempt by his parents to court the favour of Queen Anne 👶
This lockdown we are sharing more #HogarthAtHome activities on Mondays & Thursdays!
Hogarth loved animals. #GetOutside this week & become an animal detective! On your daily walk:
- Count how many animals you spot
- Are there tracks? What kind of animal do you think made them?
@nickymonkey @MartinRowson Hogarth does it again https://t.co/jSLMcVqSsY
For this #MuseumsUnlocked here are a Hogarth 1st state & some Hogarth #CastsCopiesandForgeries. LWL Curator Cynthia Roman wrote about "Copying The Sleeping Congregation" in "Hogarth's Legacy" (Yale Univ. Press 2016). Can you tell which of these is the Hogarth print?

Apart from #William's birthday, November was not a happy month for the #Hogarths. On this day Jane nee Thornhill, his beloved wife, died. She was buried @StNicksW4. Here's her coffin plate & Lysons' sketch showing her name on the same face as William's (Yale CBA B1977.14.20299)
This year's Christmas cards, designed by @QuentinBlakeHQ CBE, now available via @artukdotorg, references the Museum’s remarkable story through the Foundling Lamb which featured in the coat of arms designed for the Foundling Hospital by Hogarth.

2/2 The Countess's husband sips his morning chocolate. Possibly the most ridiculous-looking man in 18th-century painting. Or ever. Well done, William Hogarth, & happy birthday!
#OnThisDay in 1697 William Hogarth was born. Hogarth was instrumental in helping Coram realise his vision of the Foundling Hospital, encouraging leading artists of the day to donate work, thereby establishing the UK’s first public art gallery.
