I found that expressions are heavily reliant of the eyebrow position. I mean this isn't the only factor obviously but in my drawings it helps when I pay attention to eyebrows. I'll give some examples of some of my favorite expressions.

Sonic Colors manage to have such unique level aesthetics while still having a consistent amusement park theme. While the game is too reliant on 2D gameplay, have short levels, and a story that aged somewhat poorly, I still adore the game for how unique it is.
