Which in their defense was sort of true. You had to take their advice with a grain of salt. We were then sort of left on our own to discover/find our own style. It was a little easier for me since I do have a cartooning background. I mixed the 2 styles together and that was it!

Played through Wonder Boy V: Monster World III recently and took a ton of reference screenshots. Some great pixel art cartooning in that one.

Metal Gear Solid and Halo Reach displayed that you can have high fidelity caricatures - you can balance the seriousness of photo-reality with the expression of cartooning.

I think 343 should pursue something like this and ditch the overly sterile photorealism pursuit.
