This is books for me in general; they might as well be an elephant tranquilizer. I *feel* like it's page curvature/lighting that does me in, and I do WAY better on a flat screen/backlighting -- which is to say, I STILL crash so fast I'll bang my head if I'm sitting up 🙄💦💦

seconding this! it’s my go-to for backlighting and i use a very dark red or burnt sienna-type-color most of the time. this is old artrage stuff but in procreate i draw my outline in a color that’s way too bright so i can see where it is and then use hsl to fix :-)

I think you're referring to what is called a backlighting or "halo effect". It's really hard to draw and I'm still trying to learn myself, here's my recent attempt below. I recommend looking up lighting layers tutorials and backlit references (backlit suit photo refs added here)
