Today’s is the Hawaiian Rail. Extinct since 1884, it was illiustrated on Cook’s third voyage. It inhabited clearings in upland forest and had a habit of hiding in Polynesian rat burrows. Both light and dark forms are known (see pic).

These mischievous moles dig into hills and mountains to hide. If someone wakes them up, they launch themselves out of their burrows and chases them down. They can run at impressive speeds, but they're very clumsy and have trouble making sharp turns.

Some fun speculate biology. Herpaxis are mammalian herbivores who live on grassy steppes in burrows. Males will butt heads for territory control, and the right to mate with a harem of females. The larger ears point back for sounds behind them, with smaller ears pointing forward.
