Ancient Ethiopian healing scrolls believed to eliminate illness by purging evil spirits and demons from a sick person.
Part of a larger healing ritual, these medicinal scrolls were also hung in homes facing the door to scare away evil spirits trying to get in.
For our last week, my Global Medieval Lit class is reading the 15th-century Ethiopian story of the Virgin Mary, The Cannibal of Qəmər, in which a rich cannibal eats 78 people but does one (1) good deed, so the Virgin Mary persuades Jesus to let him into heaven. #MedievalTwitter

3 birds from paradise took St. Yared to heaven & there he heard songs of the 24 Elders. In the 6th c. Yared invented a #musical notation system representing pitch/melody still used in the #Ethiopian church. He named his complex melodic layers after the birds Ge'ez, Izil & Araray.

I kinda struggled to make a concept for an Ethiopian #Fakemon as I don't know that much about the country. But a quick google search introduced me to their colourful culture with bright colours and flower decorations. This photo of Woven baskets inspired this fakemon design.

The cross has been a central part & an insignia of the #Ethiopian church, since the 4th c. All priests/monks own a hand #cross, a symbol of allegiance to Christ. They are made from wood, copper or bronze decorated with a geometry pattern. @metmuseum @BLAsia_Africa @walters_museum
These beautifully-rounded quartzite pebbles are from northern Sudan. They once formed the bed-load of an ancient Nile. Rolled in Ethiopian floodwaters then sand-blasted for millennia on a hot desert terrace by Libyan winds. They decorate my fireplace - share your rocks!
