TIL about Hilma af Klint (1862–1944), a Swedish artist who was painting abstracts before Kandinsky, Mondrian, etc. What caught my eye was the geometric images in some of them—cubes, spirals, circles, etc. Beautiful!
#WomenOfTheArtsWeek - Day 3: Hilma At Klint
Ever since I discovered her, I have been fascinated by her abstract paintings -which were inspired by spiritism sessions and were kept hidden for 20 years after her death. She is an iconic pioneer of abstract art.

Returning to Hilda af Klint, this is her extraordinary watercolour, 'A Map of Great Britain,' (1932), in which she said she foresaw the Second World War. A pale face blows fire towards Britain.

“I was told I was a pioneer and committed to an uncomprehended working method.”

“Creativity is bigger than art history. Hilma is like Leonardo – she wanted to understand who we are as human beings in the cosmos.”

Rothko, Pollock, Hilma af Klint, Klimt, Kandinsky, and many others were deeply spiritual artists, often expressing this in their writings about their work. This was repressed out of our collective understanding due to heavily left-leaning politics during their cultural zeitgeist.
