Adding just one layer, you can see the mech pop already. Patterns like the toes being light but the rest of the foot is dark is consistent with the last two mechs. Even little things like that really help solidify the feeling these guys work together.

Lost Planet is a game I don't know anyone but me ever thinks about, but it had some GREAT chunky mechs. I imagine the Volker and Strelok having some similarities with something like a Hardballer
