I felt Gainax not having much of a budget for the final episodes of Evangelion worked in it's favor, in a way. I feel like the TV ending takes advantage of it's minimal budget and uses it in an artistic and psychological manner.

If you like psychological romance but less heavy, I suggest these two Haribo series on Lehzin, At the End of the Road & Mad Dog. The tops aren’t too much.
I have some issues with how ATEOTR resolve some things but an enjoyable read overall. Mad Dog is less popular but better imo.
