Since I posted a close-up of Yao last time, here’s a close-up of Makoto. This time, I tried to overcome my habit of avoiding strong highlights and shadows. I think I did reasonably well on the hair, but the back? Not so much 😆!

To finish out the piece, I add in the jewelry and tattoos. Highlights and rim lights are added throughout the piece with a hard bush, and I finalize the special effects and lighting with some adjustment layers.

How I shade hair!

Step:
1. Base color (can be any color)
2. 1st layer of shade. (Grab color of the environment and use multiply.)
3. 2nd layer of shade. (Only have it INSIDE the first layer of shade)
4. Highlights! (Apply where there are no shade)

Intentional or not that is not how dramatic lighting works on dark skin. Even in the brightest lighting the most light you will see is in the form of highlights, not the entire skin tone. Look at how marina has only a spot of highlight on her head that bright.
