Although I hate Ink for his amount of layers, he has been an important resource to improve my art style in so many ways. He may be just another Sans OC and all that stuff, but he did what no other person would have bothered to do other than tease me and belittle my work.

what i do is ill make like a blob, and erase the corners to make it look more like fire, maybe use the airbrush to make it look like its burning
then i do the same w 2 lighter colors, on diff layers, and add some blending modes on top to make it pop!

Above those layers, you can start adding light to them! I like to use the colours that are under the filter layer, but you need to keep in mind what colour the light source is! Also keep in mind what direction and how close the light source is!

I usually get in discomfort once I reach a place and see the exact same image I previously have seen online. So, I walked a km or two extra, started to see some distancing layers, I walked for another 500m. The image I had never planned to take there it was! Pyrenees from Anayet.
