In James E Allen’s ‘Corythosaurus’ (1938), two dinosaurs are depicted next to a lake. The image is from a group of six lithographs of prehistoric monsters commissioned by Sinclair Refining Company.

(2/6) The prehistoric residents of this lost world are inspired by the monster movies of the mid-20th century and the dinosaur toys of my childhood. Upright, tail-dragging postures and reptilian appearance are combined with more contemporary twists to create something unique.

To me they were omnivorous rhinos with a hint of bear (they are also called pseudo ursine). Like how wild boars present and prehistoric, were omnivorous. So Daeodon or Entelodont.

Getting back into some with a Magniventris dinosaur skull study. The Ankylosauridae family is a interesting deep dive in prehistoric species diversity. def recommend.

This summer, museums in Japan will become home to a touring exhibition that shows audiences the various prehistoric inspirations behind Pokémon.

I wrote about how paleontology and Pokémon are deeply connected here: https://t.co/gyR1jsivFJ

“Album of Prehistoric Man” (’75) also features Ruth’s paleo work, though depicting humans was never his strong point. He could draw them fine, but there is a cartoonishness about them that makes the book feel like the weak link in the series.

...“Album of Prehistoric Animals” (’74). I think this book showcases some of Ruth’s best work. While his dinosaurs are appropriately massive, they’re posed. The animals in this book are dynamic and living. (No doubt the old active mammal vs lazy reptile trope helped fuel this.)
