Lots of great ideas in this thread about lighting and design schemes. I'll just add that both of these can help set the tone for each scene, and show transition between scenes. If you're not sure of colors, you can color normally and add color filters/layers.

So I was mocking up colour schemes for that 'Slixie' piece I teased a while back, and slapped the mock up atop the roughed lineart.

And I started editting it a little.

And it got... well, *ahem*... interesting.
