I think growing up when I did spoiled me on animation backgrounds. Theres absolutely incredible work being done today in character animation, but backgrounds have continuously gotten simpler and basic. I think the blame is on Don Bluth and I think understands

I remember not very long ago I just refused to paint backgrounds. I struggled with it a lot. Now I look at all my new art and I’m very proud that I pushed myself out of my comfort zone. I’ve been watching a lot of James Julier Art Tutorials to help me improve.

I've been rewatching a lot of Studio Ghibli and I'm so tempted to try to make a comic with layered acetate and painted backgrounds.

I half did it with Home Time, but did all the line art on paper and digitally coloured them.

How much harder can I make comics?
