this is my "this area has several colors in it and i need to shade it" life hack.
i make it luminance to transparency and just slap some hues in with a layer mode so its not all just gray.

Alrighty. Could also be the blend mode maybe? Either on the leaves or the water (if it has any transparency.) Here's a tree to show that it can be done!

For instance, InDesign and Illustrator both have a tendency to introduce halo-ing around the edges of opaque pixels in images with transparency. They seem to anti-alias to white regardless of the color behind the image, so I had to manually go in and clean all of those up.
