St. Placid and his Companions, Martyrs
As a child, St. Placid was committed by his parents, who belonged to the most illustrious patrician families in Rome, to the care of St. Benedict, who later sent him to Sicily. He was put to death with his monks by sarecenic pirates in 541.
As @wmarybeard is focusing on I Claudius in #InsideCulture next week, I wonder if she knows this series of paintings of Messalina by Toulouse-Lautrec? They were the last things he painted as a rambling alcoholic in Bordeaux, fascinated by the sexual obsession of Ancient Rome.

In Florence the painter was her own woman, she had a child with her husband as well as an affair which her husband accepted. However she fell out with the latter over spending her money & she moved to Rome in 1621. Allegory of Painting (nd), Bathsheba (1650) & Adoration (1636)
Artemisia was born in Rome & her father was the great painter Orazio. He originally hailed from Tuscany & was a disciple of Caravaggio’s. Artemisia would also have the same style, having been taught by her father. Madonna (1609)
In 1572 he opened his own workshop in Rome & had assistants helping him. Vincenzo Anastagi (1571-6), Annunciation (c1575) & Mary Magdalene (1576-8). In a period of deep religiosity his images expressed that piety with genius.
In 1570 he moved to Rome. El Greco combined the styles of Italy with his Greek icon training. He used the elongated & elegant forms of Tintoretto to inform his art & create his mannered style. Annunciation (1568), Boy (1570-2) & Mount Sinai (1570-2)
