Honestly avoiding stretching and such really just comes down to good UV practices. The only pixel-specific stuff comes from modelling to a grid (1 unit in 3D = 1 pixel) and then when UVing match the 1 unit > 1 pixel ratio. Keeping the model as boxy as possible helps planar UVing
