Over the course of developing Zokai, I've increased the palette limitations for Zokai sprites several times... And I'm getting the urge to do that again. This time, I'm adding another darker shade in between the darkest shade and black. The effect is subtle, but noticeable.

Next I do a basic render on a separate layer to give myself an idea on the shapes and depth of the face. I take the skin color and use two darkened variations for this, one lighter and one darker. this
