Surprisingly, given its great 17th-century landscape paintings, ‘Dutch light’ seems to have been the invention of visiting French artists in the 19th century. Monet visited Holland three times, and produced canvases of windmills and tulip fields.

Another abandoned FANTASIA sequence was Adventures in a Perambulator, a 1914 piece from American composer John Alden Carpenter. These sketches from Sylvia Holland show how the sequence would have depicted the world from a baby’s point of view, in their pram on a walk in the park.
