Take a look at, say, SRB2. They had to hand design a lot of environments and environmental assets, pick great color schemes that account for both looking nice as well as being clear enough for gameplay purposes.
It's visually appealing, fun to look at, and fun to play.
So I guess they have to add the white teeth, which is OK I guess, since they aren't sure how to visually make the classic look work on screen.

Visually inspired by Half Life, the idea I had had to do with an experiment on a perpetual energy source, contained within an underground lab. The energy source becomes unstable, and destroys its containment, resulting in a destructive, energetic super-storm.
